What happens when God’s will meets our own? Jonah was dragged toward Nineveh through storm and darkness, resisting a mission he never wanted: mercy for Israel’s enemy. But Jesus offered something different. When a rich young man walked away sad, Jesus didn’t chase him down; he let him go with love. And when the crowds turned back, Jesus simply asked the remaining twelve, “Do you want to go too?”

Today’s guest preacher Matthias Käser draws on his own story—a broken foot that cost him a dream job, and a quick decision that eventually led him to Carlsbad, marriage, and U.S. citizenship—reflecting on the doors that stayed shut and the others that opened when he least expected it. Jesus stands at the door and knocks; he doesn’t force it open. We are free to dream, to push, and to trust what we’re given.
